Complete Works of Voltaire (Œuvres complètes de Voltaire)

Voltaire is one of the greatest writers in the French language. The Complete Works of Voltaire (Œuvres complètes de Voltaire) being published by the Voltaire Foundation is the first critical edition of the totality of his writings (in the original French), arranged chronologically to untangle the evolution of his thought. Each text is revealed anew thanks to an introduction, variants and a comprehensive annotation (in either English or French).

Letters reveal lives – private and public
Modern exploration of the Enlightenment is stimulated by the revelations in correspondences. Letters reveal both historical and personal detail, and record the public debate of liberal values.

  • Mme de Graffigny (1695-1758), pioneering woman novelist, playwright and letter-writer
  • Pierre Bayle (1647-1706), writer and philosopher, forerunner of the Enlightenment
  • La Beaumelle (1726-1773), Protestant writer and polemicist who attacked Voltaire
